Jonathan Martinez, Intern

Supervised by Renee Braune, MA, MS, LPC, LIMHP

As a Counseling Intern in UTSA’s Clinical Mental  Master’s program with a background in psychology, I am committed to helping people of all ages work through life’s challenges with care and purpose. I am especially passionate about supporting men’s mental health, the BIPOC community, and adolescents as they face difficulties and build resilience through major life changes.

I have experience working with adolescents, adults, families, parents, juveniles, and student-athletes. I have supported clients dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, divorce, stress, self-esteem concerns, anger management, sleep difficulties, performance anxiety, and other life transitions. My own experiences with anxiety, trauma, and grief help me connect with clients and respond with empathy, while helping them learn to cope in healthier ways rather than feel overwhelmed by their struggles.

I completed my internship at the UTSA Sarabia Family Counseling Center, where I worked with clients facing emotional, relationship, and behavioral challenges. I also completed clinical observation hours at UT Health Rehabilitation Medicine, where I observed evaluations with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing learning and cognitive concerns. In addition, I worked with UTSA student-athletes, supporting them with anxiety, stress, trauma, grief, depression, OCD, self-esteem concerns, and performance pressure, helping them manage high expectations and stay grounded.

My counseling approach combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy. As a first-generation student, I value being genuine, working together with clients, and being culturally aware and respectful. I aim to create a safe and supportive space where clients feel heard, respected, and encouraged to grow. I focus on helping clients build coping skills, gain insight, and find balance in their lives, even during difficult times.

Outside of counseling, I enjoy video games, anime, sports, fishing, karaoke, dad rock music, lifting weights, and spending time with family and friends. Fishing has taught me patience and adaptability, and it reminds me to pay attention to changing conditions and keep moving forward, even when things do not go as planned.
